Clothing brands are contributing to 20 percent of waste water while creating more greenhouse gas emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. With staggering statistics like that it’s time we start thinking about purchasing our clothing from earth friendly brands.
In this blog we will talk about clothing brands for men and women, everything from Eco-friendly active wear to Earth friendly shoes, Eco-conscious outwear to hand-made sustainable swimwear, so let’s get started!
One of the more popular brands you might have seen around on your Instagram feed is ten tree. Their brand wants to help re-build destroyed forests and they have been very successful in doing so! Not only are they contributing to reforestation, but this Eco-conscious brand is using earth friendly clothing dyes, organic materials and significantly reducing their usage of water waste. Their clothing is made from Tencel, recycled polyester, organic cotton and hemp. They specialize in lifestyle and active wear for men and women.
Ten Tree is rooted in the belief that they have a responsibility to protect and preserve the world we live in. Buy one item, and they’ll plant ten trees. Our vision is to plant 1 billion trees by 2030, which will drastically reduce climate change. We’ve planted over 30 million trees and restored land in over 8 countries. Ten Tree also creates special lines of clothing that get behind world events to help. The purchase of those specialty items helps with reforestation in place like South America where the deforestation was happening due to human impact and the wildfires in BC and Alberta Canada was causing devastation and breathing problems. As you shop online you can see their ‘Eco-log’ for each item which tells you how much waste was saved in comparison to other clothing brands. Let’s branch out to nature, ten trees at a time.
Girlfriend Collective is women’s active wear brand based around the slogan ‘waste not’ which is not only helping the environment, but it is empowering woman to enjoy all shapes, sizes and ages. This earth friendly brand is designing garments in a way that won’t go out of style, which of course means less waste! Girlfriend Collective discovered quickly that high end fit and feel is not a matter of cost, it’s a matter of time. We take the time to make sure every single one of our designs is so beautiful that you won’t cycle through it the next time you look through your closet.
Not only are their garment beautiful and well made, but they took the time to truly research and ensure that their materials are made from recycled polyester from a certified Taiwanese company. One garment diverts 25 plastic bottles from the landfill and each item lists the ‘Girlfriend Impact’ which tells the positive impact that buying the garment has. Girlfriend also has the unique ability to have ‘layaway’, which means you can pay in installments to work towards purchasing the items you really want.
One thing that I always struggled to find is an Eco conscious outer wear brand, but the Norden Project has you covered! High-quality, beautifully designed men’s and women’s outer wear that’s affordable, ethically produced and sustainable. Norden has a specialty water filtration system that protects the environment from water waste. The yarn is printed with FiberPrint®, a digital serial number that allows us to calculate the number of bottles used in a single garment.
The garments are shipped to Canada in biodegradable bags made from corn starch, and online orders are shipped in bags made of recycled bags (woohoo, less plastic waste!) . They also allow trade in from other brands for a discount on one of theirs, they use the old coats to make new coats, how cool is that?! You can check out their website for eligible trade in brands. If that wasn’t all, after 2 years of wear, Norden will allow you to return your old coat for a 30% discount on a new one – totally up to you if you want to return it or keep it! They jackets are made from Repreve, recycled polyester and Polartec polyfill. Stay warm out there!
Allbirds is an earth friendly sustainable men’s and women’s shoe company. Their aim is to be carbon neutral by participating in “carbon offset” programs, building solar and wind energy, and preventing carbon from entering the environment. They have partnerships with ZQ Merino and Forest Stewardship Council® certification means they source materials that meet strict standards to protect forests, and the animals and people who depend on them. Their laces are made entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic which the body of the shoe is made from wool to give you comfort and flexibility, their shoes are breathable and machine washable! All birds is a certified b corp and their packaging is made from recycled materials. They also use sugar cane, their special material called Trino which is a combination of trees and merino wool, recycled bottles, castor bean oil and recycled cardboard. Their website was a bit confusing on whether or not this is a Canadian based company, but either way you can get these shoes shipped to your door!
Last but not least is this beautifully designed, hand-made Eco friendly swimwear brand, Unika Swimwear. It is a women’s swimwear brand that proudly utilizes ECONYL®, a 100% regenerated nylon yarn derived from pre and post-industrial waste. All the swimwear pieces are handmade in Canada and if you live or are visiting the Toronto area, the store is worth a visit! ŪNIKA is built on a foundation of quality and environmental consciousness, with the core belief that all fashion businesses should play a part in designing the best version of the future.
I truly believe that these are the best of the best brands that are easily accessible in Canada. I hope this blog has helped you to make some Eco-conscious, earth friendly decisions!
